Keepsakes & Craft Sessions
I made my
first small paper lanterns in 2012 in memory of our four babies for the Wave of
Light that year. I found making them
really special as if I was having quality time with our little ones, finding it
quite therapeutic. I have always been
into arts and crafts – as a youth worker it was pretty much a requirement but
as I’d hung up my youth work trainers a few years previously I hadn’t really
done anything until this point.
to the lanterns when I shared my pictures surprised me and so I began making
them for my new extended family who had also experienced loss from early
miscarriage through to neo-natal death.
We had met on twitter and had our little gang becoming really good
friends supporting each other through the ups and downs – and we are still all
good friends now. So they became a thank
you from me to them for that support and friendship and to remember their
little ones gone too soon.
were personalised and finding some wooden butterflies I also personalised them
and sent them out across the UK and to the USA.
Soon others saw the lanterns and butterflies and began requesting them,
as I was not set up as a charity I was unable to raise funds for them however
people came forward and helped me by doing some fundraising and buying the
items gifting them to me.
In 2014 I
wanted to make more affordable items for people to buy as a keepsake, as long
as costs were covered we accepted donations, though we did not exclude anyone
who was unable to buy items. So I made
bracelets in pink and blue with charms – the ones with butterflies sold out
really quickly, the baby loss awareness ribbon we also added charms to and
again these were popular.
those I work with have not met their baby(ies) and did not receive a memory box
so find these items genuinely precious as it gives them something tangible to
hold on to. All my keepsakes are made
from the heart and with care and compassion as I know the pain of loss and how
much the little things my friends have given me have meant to me in my grief.
You can join us on the last Thursday of the month at Weoley Castle Community Church where we have a crafting session to make memories of your little ones gone too soon and/or items which we can sell to raise much needed funds. Please email [email protected] for more details
